Registering a Domain Name

There are multiple reasons to register a domain name.  The reasons may vary from as simple as taking the first step toward creating an online presence for yourself or your business to as complex as protecting your company’s name and/or products in cyberspace.  Domain names may also be registered as an investment.  There is a vibrant aftermarket to buy and sell registered domain names and a good domain name can fetch a fair amount of money.

The first step in registering a domain name is selecting a Registrar.  A Registrar is a company that is accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to submit registration information for entry into a registry database.  ICANN is the global entity that is responsible for managing and maintaining the internet’s addressing system called the Domain Name System (DNS).  The purpose of DNS is to make the internet more user-friendly.  It is much easier for a person to remember a name such as “Google” rather than a set of numbers like 72.14.207.99 - called an IP (Internet Protocol) address.  It is the Registrar that submits the information to associate a given domain name with an IP address.  The largest Registrar in the United States is www.GoDaddy.com .  They are reasonable priced and have a wide range of additional products and services available.  Some other well known Registrars are NetworkSolutions and Register.com.  Luckily for anyone interested in registering a domain name, there is a lot of competition and the prices charged by the most popular Registrars reflect the level of competition.

Go to www.GoDaddy.com to search for and register a domain name.
